The survival of the rhino is on the agenda of the 19th meeting of the International Conference on Endangered Species (CITES), to be held in November 2022 in Panama. In the run-up to this event, a recent IUCN report indicates that poaching of African rhinos will decrease by 1.6% between 2018 and 2021. Despite this rate steadily decreasing from a peak of 5.3% in 2015, IUCN continues to warn of the plight of Africa’s rhinos.

AFRICA: ACCF and Tusk raise $500,000 for biodiversity conservation
« Karibu Africa », the charity event held on 19 August 2022 in the Hamptons in north-eastern New York (USA), raised $500,000. The money will help fund the activities of the African Community & Conservation Foundation (ACCF) and Tusk. The two organisations collaborate on community outreach and wildlife protection in eastern and southern Africa.
CAMEROON: Three web influencers defend pygmies and their forests
In Cameroon, three influential web actors have joined Greenpeace Africa and its partner Green Development Advocates (GDA) to lead an ecological campaign. Together, they are raising awareness about the fight against deforestation in Cameroon, as well as the protection of the rights of indigenous communities, the first victims of deforestation. This activity takes place just a few days after the celebration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People on the theme « The role of indigenous women in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge ».

GABON: Alleged ivory trafficker arrested in Fougamou
The Gabonese authorities have just arrested an alleged wildlife trafficker. The latter was caught in the act of holding and selling about twenty kilograms of ivory. In Gabon, elephants are protected by the wildlife law in force.

DRC: US pledges support for peatland protection
During his official visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 9 August 2022, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, recognised the urgent need to preserve the Congo Basin forest. He announced the establishment of a joint DRC/US task force to protect the tropical forest and peatlands of the Congo Basin.

AFRICA: Chad and Zambia join Unesco’s World Biosphere Network
The Sena Oura National Park in Chad and the Kafue National Park in Zambia have joined the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Biosphere Network. The addition of Chad and Zambia to the Unesco biosphere network this year brings the number of African reserves in the world network to 89.
