On the occasion of World Water Day 2023, we question the Water, Climate, Development and Gender Program (WACDEP-G) in Cameroon. Implemented by the National Meteorological Directorate of the Cameroonian Ministry of Transport (MINT) and the Global Water Partnership in Cameroon (GWP-Cmr), the program promotes the inclusion of women in the management of water access projects in the context of climate change. In northern Cameroon, where the program is implemented, access to water is more difficult. Low rainfall and prolonged droughts make water resources scarce, jeopardizing rain-fed agriculture and food security. Murielle Elouga, the head of the Water, Climate, Development and Gender Program (WACDEP-G) in Cameroon, answers AFRIK 21’s questions.

CAMEROUN : le GWP-Caf place les femmes au cœur de la gestion des ressources en eau
L’accès à l’eau, que ce soit pour la consommation humaine, ou pour un usage à des agricole ou énergétique, devient davantage difficile dans la région de l’extrême –Nord Cameroun. Dans cette région caractérisée par des températures grimpant parfois jusqu’à 42° Celsius, les pluies ne tombent que sur 30 à 100 jours par an. En pareil circonstances, avoir de l’eau en quantité et en qualité, s’avère quasi impossible, notamment pour les femmes.

Une lettre de dénonciation reçue (en ampliation) par Greenpeace Afrique appelle le Gouvernement du Cameroun à ne pas délivrer l’autorisation de déversement des eaux usées au profit de l’entreprise FIPCAM du fait des risques de pollution, de destruction de l’environnement et des ressources vitales ainsi qu’une atteinte à la santé des populations.

AFRICA: Mountain forests disappearing at an alarming rate
According to a new study published on March 17, 2023, logging, fires and agriculture are causing mountain forests to disappear at an increasing rate. At least 78.1 million hectares, or 7.1 percent of the total of these ecosystems, disappeared between 2000 and 2018. The situation in Africa is of particular concern, given the climatic role played by its mountain forests.
NIGERIA: Bishops to plant 5.5 million trees in next 5 years
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) will plant 5.5 million trees over the next five years to mitigate the effects of climate change in the country. The project, presented on 14 March 2023 in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, could help more than 40 million Nigerians, whose livelihoods are threatened by climate change.
DRC: a study is launched to determine the country’s forestry heritage
The Congolese DR Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development proceeded on March 14, 2023 in Kinshasa, to the official launch of the study on the national forestry capital. This study, which will last one year, aims to determine the ecological, economic and social potential of the forest massifs of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
CONGO BASIN: Cosmetic Valley finances the forest cosmetopoeia
The French perfumery and cosmetics industry, united and coordinated by Cosmetic Valley, has announced a financial endowment of more than 500,000 euros for the study of the forest cosmetopoeia of the Congo Basin. This funding, supported by Cosmetic Valley’s endowment fund, will allow the allocation of grants for the realization, on site, of internships, doctoral theses and post-doctorates in the field of cosmetopoeia.
