Meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, from 3 to 6 January 2023, the member countries of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) took a major step towards limiting industrial fishing for tuna and all marine life. The text adopted establishes an annually renewable three-month ban on drifting fish aggregating devices (FADs). This technique has caused an 80% decline in tuna stocks over the past fifty years, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

GABON : un présumé trafiquant d’ivoire, interpellé à Kango
Au Gabon, le trafic et la commercialisation d’espèces fauniques protégées affectent particulièrement les éléphants. Leurs ivoires restent convoités par les trafiquants locaux et internationaux qui s’approvisionnent auprès de leurs intermédiaires dans le pays avant de les exporter, généralement vers le Cameroun ou l’Afrique de l’Ouest avec comme destination finale l’Asie. La dernière arrestation d’un présumé trafiquant d’ivoire local a été organisée dans la ville de Kango, le 31 janvier 2023.
GABON : exploitation illicite de bois à makokou et à bitam
Selon les informations recueillies par le média le Nouveau Gabon auprès du Ministre Délégué des Eaux et Forêts en avril 2022, le trafic illégal du bois au Gabon est estimé à plus de 184,8 milliards de FCFA par an. C’est d’ailleurs un problème mondial sachant que peu de cas d’exploitation forestière illégale arrivent en justice. Selon les estimations de la Banque mondiale, les coupes illégales représentent jusqu’à 90 % de l’ensemble des activités d’exploitation forestière dans certains pays et produisent entre 10 et 15 milliards de dollars de revenus illicites par an. Ces capitaux, contrôlés principalement par la criminalité organisée, échappent à l’impôt et affaiblissent les Etats en favorisant le développement de la corruption et de réseaux mafieux. Le Gabon réalise des efforts importants pour lutter contre l’exploitation forestière à grande échelle et l’appui de partenaires externes peut s’avérer utile.

DRC: Action to dislodge M23 rebels from Virunga National Park
Gorilla Ambassador has just addressed the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The non-governmental organisation (NGO) is asking Félix Tshisekedi to do everything possible to get the M23 out of the Virunga National Park, located in the north-east of the DRC. The armed rebel group has set up its rear base in the area of the park occupied by the mountain gorillas, thereby threatening the survival of the primates.
BENIN: Berlin finances the preservation of the sacred forest of Kpékonzoun
The Organisation for Sustainable Development and Biodiversity (ODDB) has just received a grant of approximately 72,000 euros for the protection of the biodiversity of the sacred forest of Kpékonzoun in south-eastern Benin. This project is one of a group of five selected and financed in the framework of the partnership between the Beninese National Environment and Climate Fund (FNEC) and the German Federal Ministry for the Economy and Climate (BMWK).

MADAGASCAR: the government, denounced for its inaction against deforestation
Graine de Vie, one of the main reforestation non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Madagascar, has announced the reduction of all its projects on the island by one third. The measure aims to denounce the government’s inaction in the face of « barbaric deforestation ». Between 50,000 and 100,000 hectares of forest are destroyed each year in Madagascar, pushing nearly 75% of endemic plant species to extinction.
