The Wild Africa Fund, a wildlife protection organisation based in South Africa, is experimenting with a number of repellents to protect elephants from conflict with humans. In Africa, human-wildlife conflicts are one of the causes of the disappearance of African elephants. The species now numbers around 415,000, compared with 3 to 5 million at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Biovers NG project aims to educate and mobilise around 200 young Nigerians on the role of biodiversity for the planet. The project, run by the SustyVibes organisation, is funded by the German embassy in Nigeria. The initiative comes at a time when biodiversity in Nigeria is steadily deteriorating. The West African country has lost more than 80% of its forest cover over the last thirty years.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is joining forces with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to create an expert group on financing biodiversity in Africa. The initiative is part of the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) in Africa. This framework sets out an ambitious path for achieving the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050.
DRC: 14 NGOs accuse M23 rebels of looting in Virunga Park
The 23 March Movement (M23) has once again been accused of pillaging the wildlife and floral resources of Virunga National Park in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Par cette sanction, les produits de pêche camerounais sont interdits d’entrée sur le marché européen. Car les ressources halieutiques du Cameroun sont pour ainsi dire, capturées de manière illicite, non déclarée et non réglementée. L’on parle ici de pêche INN. Un fléau qui coute à l’économie camerounaise, un manque à gagner de l’ordre de 20 milliards de Fcfa par an, selon des chiffres officiels.
MOROCCO: here’s how the Rabat Zoological Garden is adapting to the heatwave
In Morocco, the Rabat National Zoological Garden (JZN) has put in place measures to ensure the well-being of its animals during the heatwave. In a « red » alert bulletin published on 15 July 2023, the Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) announced that a heatwave was expected between 17 and 21 July 2023 in various provinces of the Kingdom, with temperatures varying between 37 and 48°C.
CAMEROUN : des pratiques hors la loi du ministère des forêts, dénoncées à Ebo
Le ministre camerounais des Forêts et de la Faune vient d’octroyer un certificat d’assiette annuelle de coupe à l’entreprise Sextransbois, déjà bénéficiaire d’une concession forestière en convention provisoire. Mais pour la société civile, le processus d’octroi de ce certificat qui concerne une zone du massif forestier d’Ebo, situé à cheval entre les régions du Centre et du littoral, ne s’est pas déroulée comme le veulent la législation et la réglementation forestières, en vigueur au Cameroun. Une décision qui constitue une menace sur les droits des communautés Banen qui ont toujours revendiqué un retour sur leurs terres ancestrales, ainsi que sur la biodiversité de cette forêt.
DRC: violence threatens to close the world’s only bonobo reserve
Ekolo ya Bonobo could close. The world’s only bonobo reintegration reserve, located in the north-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been at a standstill since 13 June 2023. The reason: violence perpetrated by as yet unidentified armed assailants in Basankusu, in the Equateur province where the reserve is located. Four primates were shot dead.
AFRICA: Leboncoin adopts new regulations against the ivory trade
French online sales giant Leboncoin has tightened its regulations against the ivory trade. In addition to ivory items, the company is now removing from its platform any item that might turn out to be made of ivory. This measure is in support of elephant conservation efforts in Africa. The continent has lost more than 100,000 elephants in 20 years due to the ivory trade.
