After deploring the heavy human toll of another forest fire in northern Algeria, the authorities are investigating the criminal origins of a disaster that exacerbates global warming.

CAMEROON: Marginalisation of women, an obstacle to access to water
The non-involvement of women and girls in the water and climate sector is hampering Cameroon’s efforts to achieve universal access to water. The Cameroon National Water Partnership (GWP-Cmr), in collaboration with the Cameroon Ministry for the Promotion of Women and the Family and UN Women organised a gender café on 17 August 2022 in Yaoundé, for the inclusion of women in decision-making circles on the water and climate sector.

GABON: Alleged ivory trafficker arrested in Fougamou
The Gabonese authorities have just arrested an alleged wildlife trafficker. The latter was caught in the act of holding and selling about twenty kilograms of ivory. In Gabon, elephants are protected by the wildlife law in force.

DRC: US pledges support for peatland protection
During his official visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 9 August 2022, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, recognised the urgent need to preserve the Congo Basin forest. He announced the establishment of a joint DRC/US task force to protect the tropical forest and peatlands of the Congo Basin.

Le public sud-africain et les touristes internationaux n’apprécient plus la chasse au trophée. Au moins 84% d’entre eux souhaitent que le gouvernement d’Afrique du Sud interdise cette pratique touristique, qui décime la faune sauvage. The Sena Oura National Park in Chad and the Kafue National Park in Zambia have joined the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Biosphere Network. The addition of Chad and Zambia to the Unesco biosphere network this year brings the number of African reserves in the world network to 89.
