In Niger, the decision to temporarily close several gold mining sites in the northern part of the country was made on May 3, 2024, after more than fifty ruminant animals died suddenly. Suspected poisoning linked to gold mining activities is believed to be the cause, with local farmers attributing the contamination to water discharged by the Chinese gold mining company Sahara SARL.

NIGER: Uranium operator Somida on trial again for pollution
The trial on the merits of the Agadez civil society case against Somida opened on Wednesday January 31, 2024 before the Niamey High Court. The company, which operates a uranium mine in northern Niger, is once again accused of polluting the environment and negatively impacting the health of local residents. The case is due to be heard on March 6, 2024.

CAMEROON: Oil pollution falls by 0.3% in one year, thanks to chemical marking
In Cameroon, pollution from petroleum products fell from 1.28% in 2021 to 0.94% on 30 September 2022, a reduction of 0.34% in one year. According to the Cameroonian Ministry of Water and Energy, this reduction in oil pollution is one of the benefits of the Chemical Marking of Petroleum Products Programme.

La République démocratique du Congo (RDC) passe outre les inquiétudes suscitées par ses nouveaux projets énergétiques. Le président Félix Tshisekedi a lui-même lancé le 28 juillet 2022 les appels d’offres pour l’attribution aux enchères de 30 blocs pétroliers et gaziers couvrant une zone de plus de 240 000 km² qui empiète sur plusieurs régions forestières et parcs nationaux. Craignant une catastrophe écologique, plus de 100 000 personnes ont signé une pétition demandant au président RD congolais, de mettre fin à ces projets pétroliers.
