Launched in 2017 by the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) and the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH), the Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI) is launching two new platforms to support sustainable cocoa farming in West Africa. The two new resources presented on 14 February 2024 aim to halt deforestation caused by cocoa and restore forest areas. This initiative commits companies in the sector to mapping their supply chains and adopting methodologies for assessing the risks of deforestation, all with a view to transparency and reporting.

GABON : signature de 2 accords de partenariat public-privé (PPP) pour la biodiversité
Le ministère des Eaux et Forêts, représenté par le Général de Brigade, M. Maurice Ntossui Allogo, en collaboration avec l’ONG Conservation Justice (CJ), représenté par son Directeur Exécutif M. Luc Mathot, a signé ce jour deux protocoles d’accord, d’une part, avec les sociétés forestières Rougier Gabon et SOMIVAB, représentés respectivement par leurs directeurs généraux M. Stéphane Jaffret et M. Andrea Rigoni, d’autre part, avec la société Gabon Advance Wood (GAW) et la Fondation Lékédi Biodiversité représentés par Mme Sylvie Boldrini et M. Eric Willaume.
WEST AFRICA: towards a regional action plan for biodiversity
The biodiversity crisis was at the heart of a meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on February 18, 2024 in Abuja, Nigeria. Participants were invited to make proposals for a regional action plan to extend the 30×30 target for biodiversity in West Africa.

Conservation Justice est active dans la lutte contre le trafic de faune et
l’exploitation forestière illégale, tout en renforçant les droits des
communautés. Au Gabon, ces actions vont de l’appui aux autorités judiciaires,
la sensibilisation, la formation jusqu’à l’accompagnement et le renforcement
des communautés locales.
GABON : trois présumés trafiquants d’ivoire, interpelés à Mouila
De nouveaux pourfendeurs d’espèces animales protégées viennent d’être mis en déroute au Gabon. Bénéficiant de l’assistance technique de l’ONG Conservation Justice, des éléments de la police judiciaire ont appréhendé trois individus en possession de six pointes d’ivoire. L’opération a été menée le 9 février 2024 à Mouila, une ville située dans le sud du pays. Les trois présumés trafiquants sont actuellement en détention dans les locaux de la police judiciaire de Mouila, en attendant leur comparution devant le Procureur de la République. Ils encourent une peine d’emprisonnement de 10 ans selon le code pénal gabonais.
BÉNIN: sculpture and conservation in symphony in the Pahou classified forest
Since January 6, 2024, a plastic art exhibition has been taking place in the Pahou classified forest, located 30 minutes from Cotonou, Benin’s economic capital. The initiative, supported by the Institut français du Bénin, aims to protect nature through artistic expression.
LIBERIA: a campaign to assess fish stocks, for sustainable fishing
A scientific prospecting campaign was launched on January 26, 2024 at the fishing port of Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. The initiative, coordinated by the Ministerial Conference on Fisheries Cooperation among African States bordering the Atlantic Ocean (COMHAFAT), involves assessing fish stocks in Liberia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), with a view to sustainable fishing.
MADAGASCAR: a roadmap to reconcile agriculture and biodiversity
The results of the Integration of Biodiversity in Madagascar’s Agricultural Sectors project were presented on December 18, 2023 in Antananarivo. The project has led to the definition of a roadmap for integrating biodiversity into Madagascar’s agricultural sectors. The document is currently being finalized and will be implemented in 2024.
CONGO: ATIBT to eliminate « prejudice » against logging
The European Union (EU) delegation in Brazzaville has asked the International Tropical Timber Technical Association (ATIBT) to draw up and implement a project to support the private sector in Congo. The aim is to promote the involvement of forestry sector companies operating in the Congo in responsible forest management, in line with the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (APV-FLEGT) signed between the Republic of Congo and the European Union in 2010.
DRC: Haut-Uele hosts new Usaid-funded resilience project
As part of its « Alliance for Biodiversity Protection and Development » project, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has signed a partnership agreement with Sofibanque to support the development of inclusive and sustainable small and medium-sized enterprises in the Haut-Uele province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This partnership aims to improve living conditions for local communities and reduce pressure on natural resources around Garamba National Park and the Kibali gold mine.
